Handmade soap keeps all its natural glycerin, which makes it lovely on the skin, but glycerin also attracts water. Leave a bar sitting in a puddle and it will soften and disappear fast. With a few easy habits you can make every bar last noticeably longer.
1. Use a draining soap dish
This is the single biggest difference. Choose a dish with slats, ridges or holes so water runs off and air reaches the underside. A bar that dries out between uses stays firm.
2. Keep it out of the shower stream
Store your soap where water doesn't splash onto it constantly, such as a shelf away from the shower head.
3. Let it dry between uses
If several people share a bar, try cutting it in two and alternating the halves so each one gets time to dry.
4. Lather with your hands or a cloth
Rub the bar between wet hands or on a washcloth for a few seconds rather than scrubbing it directly over your body for a long time. You get plenty of lather with less soap used up.
5. Store spare bars properly
Keep extra bars in a cool, dry place, away from the humid bathroom, ideally in a drawer or cupboard. They continue to harden slightly over time, which only makes them last longer.
Dry soap is happy soap. A well-drained bar lasts noticeably longer.
Use up the last slivers
- Press a small sliver onto a new, wet bar and it will stick together.
- Collect slivers in a mesh or cotton pouch to make a gentle scrub bag.
