Salicylic acid is one of the most talked-about ingredients in skincare, and it's in countless face washes. But is it right for your skin? Here's a simple guide.
What is salicylic acid?
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). Unlike many exfoliants, it is oil-soluble, so it can work inside the pore to loosen the oil and dead skin that lead to blackheads and whiteheads. In face washes it is usually used at 0.5–2%.
Who it suits
- Oily and combination skin that feels greasy by midday.
- Blackheads and clogged pores, especially on the nose and chin.
- Mild, occasional breakouts.
Who should be careful
- Dry or very sensitive skin – it can cause dryness and flaking.
- Skin conditions like eczema or rosacea – check with a dermatologist first.
- Pregnancy – ask your doctor before using acids.
- If you already use retinoids or other acids – combining too many can irritate.
How to use it well
- Start once a day, or even every other day.
- Massage gently for 30–60 seconds and rinse with lukewarm water.
- Always follow with a moisturiser.
- Wear sunscreen during the day – exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive.
More is not better. If your skin feels tight, stings or peels, cut back.
A botanical alternative: willow bark
Willow bark naturally contains salicin, a plant compound related to salicylic acid, which is why it is often used in gentle cleansers for oily and blemish-prone skin. Our Willow Face Cleanser is made for everyday pore care. For a complete routine, see the Willow Acne Duo.
Prefer a bar? Our Neem & Mentha Soap and Lemon Soap are refreshing options for oily skin. Patch test first, as always.
