In Ayurveda, few beauty rituals are as treasured as Kumkumadi Tailam, a golden face oil named after its star ingredient, kumkuma (saffron). It has been used for generations to help skin look brighter, more even and radiant.
What's inside?
Traditional recipes are described in classical Ayurvedic texts and blend saffron with a long list of herbs cooked into a base oil, often sesame. Common ingredients include:
- Kesar (saffron) – prized for a bright, glowing complexion.
- Chandan (sandalwood) – cooling and soothing.
- Manjistha – traditionally used for even-toned skin.
- Haldi (turmeric) and lotus – long used in Indian skincare rituals.
How to use it: a simple night ritual
- Cleanse your face and pat it almost dry.
- Warm 2–3 drops between your fingertips.
- Press onto the face, then massage in gentle upward strokes for a minute or two.
- Leave on overnight, or wash off after 20–30 minutes if your skin is oily.
A face oil ritual is as much about the few minutes of calm massage as it is about the oil itself.
Who should be careful?
Very oily or acne-prone skin may find rich oils heavy; use a smaller amount or apply only a few nights a week. Always patch test on the inner arm for 24 hours first.
